We’ve made it through the first month of Hurricane Season here in South Florida without any major catastrophes other than not having your rain jacket on hand! Mother Nature has been fairly gracious to us in Florida over the past couple years as she has spared us from some major storms. But that was then, and this is now. We can never be too prepared for what may be coming!
If you have not started putting together your hurricane supply kit or stocked your closets yet, now is the time. Don’t wait until the storm is on its way – supplies will be short and lines will be long!
Knowing that you are stocked up and prepared for the storm will make things much easier if and when one is approaching. You will have plenty of other things to handle in preparation, so having one less thing to do will make a world of difference.
After an emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days. Being prepared means having your own food, water and other supplies to last for at least 72 hours. You also need to consider what unique needs your family has including senior citizens, pets and medications.
Below is a checklist of items you should definitely include in your supply. Most of the items are inexpensive and easy to find, and any one of them could save your life.
- Water – at least one gallon of water per person per day
- Food – minimum of a three day supply of non-perishable food
- Manual can opener for food
- Cell phone with extra charger cords
- Power Bank (backup battery charger – you can even find solar powered ones!)
- Flashlights
- First aid kit
- Extra batteries
- Battery-powered or hand crank radio
- Whistle to signal for help
- Moist towelettes and baby wipes
- Garbage bags and plastic ties
- Duct tape and tools for minor repairs
